Blair Castle

At Blair Atholl off the A9, 5 miles North of Pitlochry. (approx 1/2hr)
The Hercules Garden at Blair Castle is a wonderful example of the restoration of the formal original walled Jacobean garden.

One of Europe's finest formal gardens. Magnificent Victorian Parterre celebrating family and Scottish Heraldry. Featured in the film Rob Roy.

Pitmedden Garden

On A920, 1m W of Pitmedden village and 14m N of Aberdeen,

The centrepiece of this property is the Great Garden, originally laid out in 1675 by Sir Alexander Seton, 1st Baronet of Pitmedden. In the 1950s re-creation of the elaborate floral designs under the guidance of the late Dr James Richardson, three of the formal parterres were taken from designs possibly used in the gardens at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh in 1647. The fourth parterre is a heraldic design based on Sir Alexander's coat-of-arms.

A long run from Aberfeldy but well worth it for those really interested.

Branklyn Garden

On the A85, Dundee Road, just as you leave Perth on the left.
All year, daily 9.30-6.
This attractive little garden in Perth was once described as ‘the finest two acres of private garden in the country’. Contains an outstanding collection of plants, particularly rhododendrons, alpines, herbaceous and peat-garden plants, which attracts gardeners and botanists from all over the world.

Crarae Garden

On the banks of Loch Fyne, on the west coast, immerse yourself in Britain's finest example of an exotic Himalayan-style woodland. This tranquil site, with its dramatic gorge, rippling burn, waterfalls and cliffs, is rich in rhododendrons and azaleas, eucalyptus and magnolias. The autumn colours of bold berries and stunning cotoneaster and maple create a colourful mosaic amongst a multitude of trees and shrubs.

A visit to this property is enhanced by the 1.5 ha (3,75 a) of walled garden, which incorporates herbaceous borders and many unusual plants. The garden provides a wonderful display at all times of the year. The great yew hedges, fascinating examples of the art of topiary, date from as early as 1702. The castle grounds are perfect for nature study and there are six exciting trails for visitors to enjoy. In the Visitor Centre are two permanent exhibitions.
